What is UNYC?
UNYC is the UNYA National Youth Conference. It’s the largest residential youth conference held annually in Australia and is consistently recognised by government and the NGO community as Australia’s premier conference for young people.
The weeklong conference brings together over 150 bright-minded and passionate young people from every State and Territory in Australia, as well as New Zealand and South Korea. Every year, UNYA selects an Australian capital city to host UNYC. This year, UNYC makes a triumphant return to Perth, Western Australia, after seven years in the wilderness. Recent UNYCs have been held in Brisbane (2009), Hobart (2008) and ACT (2007).
UNYC aims to educate young delegates about important international issues facing today’s world. The theme of UNYC 2010, Advocating for Change: Empowering Minorities, will focus on the empowerment of a range of disadvantaged social groups on both a local and international level. During the conference, delegates participate in a range of stimulating exercises, from model United Nations debate to interactive speakers’ forums. Delegates will also gets hands-on experience during Change excursions and be part of the nation-wide campaign, YouthChange. After UNYC, the experience does not end. Delegates will be equip with a range of tools to effect positive change in their local communities and have numerous opportunities to make a difference within UNYA and other community groups.
